Boondocking or Dry Camping: Willits or Fort Bragg CA

We will be going to the Northern CA coast and need to camp with our 30FT 5th wheel on Friday and Saturday night either on 101 north of Willits or near Fort Bragg CA. We love to boondock or dry camp since we are totally self contained. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
ps: yes, we will be pulling the 30FT 5th wheel on CA 1. It requires careful attention but I've done it several times with no problems. I use all pullouts to let traffic by.

RE: Two laptops on one aircard?

We got our Cradlepoint router and Sprint aircard from 3GStore.com. Service was great and tech support to help us get it running optimally was outstanding. Recommended.

RE: Cuil search engine

With ad blocker add ins to Firefox, it was ok. I liked the summary and the way the results were presented. The results of several searches found the info/ web pages I was looking for. Its worth a look and trial.

RE: Recommend good service Seattle Eastside?

Its a little further away, but Lifestyles RV in Mount Vernon has a great service department. We have had very good results getting our new 5th wheel set up and the little bit of work done on it. Recommended. I've heard many poor things about Poulsbo RV and after being lied to by one of their Sales Managers, I won't do any business with them.

RE: Northwood Arctic Fox 29-5T--Is this a good price

Our final choices were the Arctic Fox 29-5T and the Cruiser in our signature. We found the floor plan comparable, but chose the Cruiser because of the price was $24,500 plus tax. Fit and finish was better on the Cruiser; everything else was directly comparable. RVWholesalers.com lead on price, but our local dealer beat them out just slightly. We have had no problems with our Cruiser in 4 months of full timing and would buy a Cruiser again. Hope this helps.

RE: Dealer Advice about Conveter/Charger

We installed a PD9260 in place of the stock WFCO 60 amp and battery charging improved immensely. We mainly dry camp at National Forest and state park campgrounds. Most RV's and dealers are used to customers only going to RV parks and immediately hooking up to electricity, water and sewer. Most RV's are not really built for dry camping or boondocking.

RE: Scientists find bugs that eat waste and excrete petrol

Actually this is but one approach to liquid fuels. It is looking quite interesting. There are many others. The most positive thing is that they are being done with private money, not government. Business ventures know that you have to provide a better product at a lower price to succeed. As an engineer and retired CEO, I am quite encouraged by what I am reading on many technical websites. There are interesting developments in batteries and ultra capacitors that could make solar and wind practical in the foreseeable future. It is good to see the mainstream press covering this story.

RE: Camping 'N Kayaking

I'm an experienced sea kayker (Puget Sound) and a very strong long distance swimmer and I almost never wear a life jacket. I carry it on the kayak under the bungee cords.
We just bought 9' play boats that rack on top of the truck. Great for fishing and playing in the surf.

RE: What does Irfanview do?

Irfanview is an outstanding photo viewer - and its free. We use it to view all our photos and for slide presentations with a projector. Managing our photo storage we do with Windows Explorer - works ok and since we use it for all other file management, we are familiar with all its quirks.

RE: Honda Generator

WiseSales.com seems to have the most recommendations on this forum. I bought ours from them and was highly satisfied with price ($870) and delivery. Highly recommended.

RE: How to Measure Your RV 12V Power Usage?

I had a WFCO 8960 and the voltage never went above 13.2, no matter how long the charge went on. Talked to Randy at Bestconverter.com and searched the forum for info on the WFCO and found that many people have been having charging problems. Its ok if only camping at full hookup sites but not for dry camping. Replaced it with PD 9260 and now the Honda 2000 easily keeps the 2 batteries charged.

RE: Crossroads cruiser

See our signature for our unit. We love our Cruiser and it has been quite trouble free. Only minor little problems. Be sure that you check RVWholesalers.com for pricing and good delivery service. They have a great reputation on this forum.

RE: Travelstar 19ck converter upgrade

I replaced the WFCO that came with our unit with the PD 9260 and charging has been great ever since. Love the PD. Call Randy @ Bestconverters.com and talk to him. He's the expert.

RE: Select Comfort bed

We have our Queen in ours. One problem, the plywood support is 2 inches to short in the sides and in the length. Otherwise, we love it and wouldn't sleep on anything else.

RE: 12volt to 110 ???

I have hardwired our 400 watt inverter to our 2X 6 volt 240 amp hour batteries. While the system powers our 2 Dell laptop computers very well, they use up almost half the charge of the battery system for an evenings computing. You will need a very large battery system and a good generator (Honda 2000) to recharge the next day.

We have Sprint data service with a 727 modem and a Cradlepoint cellular router. We had great high speed coverage from Brookings to Astoria. PM me and I'll send you a list of our camping spots - Oregon State Parks.

RE: Are holidays difficult for you?

We're sitting tight here in the great Elwah campground in the Olympic National Park. $6.00 per night, first come first served. We'll stay here dry camping until Tuesday after Memorial Day. Marvelous mountains, trees and the Elwah River rushing past. Great hiking and kayaking.

RE: Wireless Router

My wife and I both have laptops plus we have a server. All are on our wifi network using the Cradlepoint cellular router.
We got all items we needed plus excellent technical support from 3GStore. Everything installed quickly and works great. We can have a computer on in the truck while pulling our 5er down the road.
ps: both of us are on the internet right now!
